We are faced with a new invasive plant, Starry Stonewort which is now in the nearby waters of Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay. A fact sheet is attached. Clark Lake is not yet infested but we need boaters to be vigilant about removing strands of this plant from their boats when leaving infested waters and checking again and cleaning before entering our lake.
We would like to have volunteers at the boat ramp on weekends and holidays to educate boaters about this threat, assist them in inspecting their boats and trailers and removing any remnants of the starwort or other debris that is identified. Plans are to staff the ramp from 10 AM until 2 PM weekends and Holidays for the rest of the summer so we will need a lot of volunteers.
Anyone interested in helping should meet at the West Side boat ramp at 1 PM on Saturday 1 July. Paul Schumacher will give a brief training and I will record names and create a schedule. Even if you cannot attend either of the trainings, please contact me if interested and we will get you on the schedule.
The only tools you need are gloves, a garbage bag and a positive attitude. Teens and adults can share this experience of community and environmental responsibility.
Hope to see or hear from you all.
